Travel tips for families with small kids

a. Traveling With Small Kids For The First Time? When you become a parent you probably think it’s the end of your traveling adventures or that you will have to wait at least 15 years to go on a family vacation. Let me tell you it doesn’t have to be like that. I mean, yes you will have to be more careful but it doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. What you have to know for sure is that you won’t be able to go to and from the touristic destinations as fast as you used to. That means spending a couple more of days in the place you are visiting.

You also have to have in mind that kids need some rest and it can be stressful for them to be moving around all the time. What you can do is to limit the number of places to see to 4 or 5 if they are close. If they involve long car or bus rides just see 2 or 3 places.

You also have to have in mind that kids need some rest and it can be stressful for them to be moving around all the time. What you can do is to limit the number of places to see to 4 or 5 if they are close. If they involve long car or bus rides just see 2 or 3 places. That is why finding a hotel that is in a central location from the places you want to visit and to come back to it at least once a day to rest is also a good idea. This way kids won’t be worn out that fast.

b. How To Relax When Traveling With Kids? As a traveling mom I can’t help asking myself this question every time we are about to go on vacation “What happens if I lose my child?” And I think most traveling moms do, especially the ones with small, wandering children. So I figured out a way to help diminish that worry. Next time before starting on the trip, visit a local hospital and ask if they will make one of those plastic bracelets for each of your children. Usually, they will. Then you can put whatever information you’d like on a slip of paper and insert it into the bracelet.

If you’re traveling to/through foreign countries, you may want to put the information in the native language of the countries you are planning to visit.

c. Kid Essential I’m a freak. I’ll admit it! I’m ridiculously paranoid my son is either going to get lost or kidnapped. Yes, I have serious issues to resolve, but that doesn’t stop me from being extra cautious. My son is at the age where he can understand what to do if we are separated.

Sometimes screaming: “MAMA, PAPA” in a crowded location doesn’t do the trick. But a extra powerful whistle does! I know, when you first buy it for them they will drive you batty by blowing it every five milliseconds.

I know, when you first buy it for them they will drive you batty by blowing it every five milliseconds. But trust me, the novelty does wear off and if explained properly they will understand the importance of this essential traveling accessory.

d. More Traveling with Kids This might sound super obvious, but I find my husband constantly forgetting to do this easy but insanely necessary act: Ask my son before we head off in car, bus, or train if he has to PEE! And, of course, 10 minutes into the drive, stuck in traffic somewhere my son screams, ‘I have to do Pee Pee!”

So take my advice: Not only ask them if they have to pee, tell them they aren’t going on trip unless they pee beforehand.

e. Flying with Kids Can Be Fun! Before child I remember my flying time was full of catching up with my journal, or reading a good book, or just plain sleeping.

But it really doesn’t have to be painful. What I do is I STOCK UP on cheap toys. In Central America you can easily find toys between $1-2 at local markets and stores that are frequented by the natives.

If you’re flying from the States, Europe, Canada, Australia or other Western countries there are plenty $1 type shops.

Here’s a secret for you and what can eat up a good amount of time:

f. Let Them Get Wet! I know whenever I travel anywhere with my son and there is water in the vicinity he is just aching to get wet! I mean, it doesn’t matter if he’s in winter clothes, he’ll just jump right in and get soaked.

I’m personally not a great lover of water and never understood the insane attraction. However, after traveling around with my friends who didn’t care so much about their kids getting wet from their hats (heads) to their sneakers (feet) because they always had an extra set of clothes and shoes, plus plenty of plastic bags to put away all their wet clothes.

Plus plenty of plastic bags to put away all their wet clothes. After the number of happy faces on both the kids and the parents, I folded and am now doing the same. Amazingly enough, my son’s adventure is that much better. But the best part, he thinks his mom is the da bomb!

How To Beat Jetlag

Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure the further your trip the more chance you stand of being caught out by jet lag. Some are lucky and never seem to be affected, however for others jet lag can be quite severe and something that we really would prefer to avoid.

Some people say that it actually takes the body one day per time zone that we cross to fully recover ! That is great as I calculate that I am now on a 12 hour flight that crosses 6 time zones all for a 6 day trip ! So my body will have just recovered by the time I am boarding my return journey !

This is why it is so important to actually minimise the affects jet lag has on us, after all if you are travelling on business you need to arrive fresh and ready for the heavy schedule, if you are on vacation, well you deserve every minute you can get right ?! Here we will look at a few ideas, that should help to ease the strain.

With increased air traffic a lot of airlines especially on their long haul services have actually introduced twice daily flights, one which normally departs in the evening and another the daytime. The airlines will sell you the advantages of both and it is true that they both do have very strong support. However, it very much depends which direction you are travelling in, and whether you are an active flyer or a 'wake me up when we land' sort. Let's use the Hong Kong to London route as an example, which a lot of airlines offer two flights a day. If you leave in the evening you will arrive in London in the early morning however if you take the daytime service you will arrive late evening in London.

This means with the daytime service you have 13 hours or so to fill, sleeping is not really advisable as you will need to do that when you arrive in London in the evening. As we all know airline movies can be good but the chances are if you travel frequently, or watch movies a lot then you may have already seen most of them. You can work of course but does the airline you are flying with have laptop electric supplies, otherwise you may be restricted to a couple of hours or so ? This is where the initial problem lies, because if you do fall asleep then chances are you will find it difficult to get to sleep that evening in London, this would then worsen the jet lag effect and possibly ruin the next day for you, due to fatigue.

The opposite is of course true for the evening service, you can sleep as you are aided by the fact that your body clock is saying that you should. Then when you awake you will hopefully be refreshed and ready to work after a nice hot shower.

Today, airlines are going out of their way to ensure that you have a comfortable flight, and that you arrive as fresh as possible, at the other end. The leading airlines offer a total bed experience, which is where the seat will go all the way back flat, duvets, and pillows are offered, plus pygamas etc. This is now par for the course in First Class with Singapore Airlines and British Airways being among the first to offer it. Virgin is also in the process of installing seat/beds, and being Virgin they are taking it one step further and will have double/seat beds for those that would like a bit of a cuddle ! The airlines also offer arrival lounges compared to the standard departure lounge, which are for first and business class passengers. These arrival lounges have full shower facilities, so that you can arrive and freshen up without even having left the airport ! All these services are a great help but what is there that you can do to help yourself ?

Firstly avoid alcohol in flight, with the pressurized air in the cabin your body dehydrates substantially, and alcohol affects the body clock by not giving you a full and refreshing sleep. In fact, try to drink as much water as possible. Just ask the steward (ess) for a large bottle and keep it by your seat so you can take sips whenever you want.

Drinking a lot of water will also help in other ways. It is highly recommended to move around when in-flight, walk up and down the plane, do dome stretching exercises, to keep the blood circulating, and stop the joints from stiffening.

While seated, swirl your ankles around from time to time.

Again, depending on which direction you are travelling whether east or west, and how much sleep you require, you should set your watch to the local time of your destination as you board, and sleep according to that. This helps your body to start the change in its body clock, which is so important when combating jet lag. Let's say for example that you are flying from Bangkok to Paris, then when you board the plane you should set your clock to Paris time and try not to sleep until it is close to sleeping time in Paris.

When you do arrive at your destination, and it is day time, try not to go to sleep, no matter how tired you are. Instead try to go outdoors and into the sunshine if possible, this helps to alter your body clock, and will mean you will be back to normal a lot quicker. One of the first hotels to offer a jet lag service was the Okura Hotel in Tokyo. They would offer the guests, a special bright light in their rooms, special food designed to help the body clock, massages and a whole load of other things, all so that you could be refreshed and ready to go as soon as possible.

If you can't resist and your eyelids are drooping and you feel more and more tired, then set you alarm for four hours time, have a very hot bath, and then jump into bed.

Sweet dreams and happy travelling !

Indonesia Flora and Fauna

Indonesia’s moderate climate throughout the year, its fertile soil brought about by lava, and its minerals found on land and in the sea caused by volcanic eruptions, have made this the ideal habitat for a large number of unique and endemic flora and fauna. Indonesia has among the most diverse variety of species of animal life on land and in the seas found anywhere in the world.

Indonesia’s flora and fauna is divided by the “Wallace Line” that runs between Bali and Lombok, continuing north between Kalimantan and Sulawesi. West of the Line, vegetation and wildlife are Asian in nature, whereas east of the Line, these resemble those of Australia.

Vegetation found in different parts of the archipelago varies according to rainfall, soil and altitude. On the wetter islands, on Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Papua, ancient rainforests cover large areas. These forests are rich in valuable hardwood, aromatic and spice trees, as well as exotic fruit trees. Lately, however, through illegal logging and human settlements, large tracts of forests have been decimated leaving infertile land that cause flooding and erosions.

On the islands east of Bali known as the Nusatenggara islands (or once known as the Small Sunda Islands), there are savannahs, while on other mountain tops such as in the Mt. Gede National Park only 100 kms from Jakarta, one finds edelweiss, more reminiscent of Switzerland.

Indonesia’s wildlife varies from the Java mouse deer (or kancil) and the one-horned rhino to the Sumatran and Kalimantan Orang Utan, the Sulwesi anoa (a small water buffalo), the prehistoric giant Komodo lizard to the exotic Bird of Paradise in Papua.

How about flora?. Here in Indonesia, you can find Raflesia Arnoldi in Bengkulu, one of the giant and unique flower in the world.

To preserve these unique flora and fauna Indonesia has designated 44 national parks throughout the archipelago, covering both land and sea, a large number of protected reserves offering ecotourism opportunities, as well as botanic gardens and zoos.

Komodo National Park: Into The Heart of The Dragons

Real dragons spurt no fire, have no need to fly and cast no magic spells. And still, one look from them might render you speechless. These komodos, the real life dragons, are a sight indeed. Gigantic, the lizard-like creatures are about two or three meters in length. They can easily weigh about 165 kilograms. Despite of their sheer size and appearance, they are not active hunters. What makes them intimidating is the fact that they are a patient predator. In the wild, they stalk a victim, usually a weak or injured one. One bite and that's what it usually takes. After following the victim for a while, sometimes up to several days' time, the komodos will devour the dying prey.

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is an endangered species which can only be found in the Komodo National Park (KNP) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Because of the unique and rare nature of this animal, KNP was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

The park includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2.At least 2500 Komodos live in this area. Large dragons are usually three meters long and weigh up to 90 kg. Their habitat has beautiful panoramic views of savannas, rain forests, white beaches, beautiful corals, and clean blue seas. In this area, you can also find horses, wild buffalo, deer, wild boar, snakes, monkeys, and various types of birds.

KNP has a rich and amazing underwater sea biotica. Divers claim that Komodo waters are one of the best diving sites in the world. It has fascinating underwater scenery. You can find 385 species of beautiful corals, mangrove forests, and seaweeds as a home for thousands of fish species, 70 types of sponges, 10 types of dolphins, 6 types of whales, green turtles and various types of sharks and stingrays.

Or you can do some diving activities in Komodo Island. Go this link if you want to see more information about it.

Karimunjawa Island, The virgin of Java

Although already more than 10 years living in Semarang - Indonesia, I have never come to Karimunjawa even heard it often. So I am now living in Jakarta decided to come to Karimunjawa.

How do I get there and what activities can be done?

There are two ways which can be used is using a fast boat or ferry, and can pass or Jepara Semarang. There is only via ferry from Jepara. Why do I tell the public? because there are also other means of transport ie air, just the price is quite expensive because we have to lease the aircraft.

Since that time I did not chance to get tickets fast boat from Semarang because late messages and lucky to get tickets through the fast boat from Jepara to Semarang because there is a cancel ticket orders. I am therefore forced to depart from Jepara to use the ferry economy class because they do not get the VIP class.
So here I know if what if what if the ferry ride or boat ride fast.

To go to the port can Jepara Semarang Terboyo depart from the terminal. Travel from Semarang to Jepara approximately one hour. Buses are available starting at half four in the morning. Counters to buy tickets will not hours half seven in the morning, so go and calculate the hours until arrival in Jepara. Bus tickets only for Rp. 6ribu rupiah per person.

08:30 hours the ship departed from the port of Jepara. For those who want to find a comfortable seating position, hours 7 must ride the ship. Because ships are often full, especially at holiday time.

14:30 hrs ferry docked at the pier Karimunjawajawa.

If you stayed in the cottage Dewa Daru, you can drop ship directly to the room enough to walk, because the hotel is right in front of the pier, closer to home too.

Time already, but still managed to Tanjung Gelam, in most west coast of the island of Karimunjawa. Here could do snorkeling, photo images or relax on the beach, because clean beaches, there is no human waste, much cleaner than when I went to the Island Tidung (thousand islands).

Once satisfied, and arrived at the hotel shower, then eat, since tomorrow is still a lot of activity this evening so full of rest rooms.

Waking up every morning at half 6 to go to Nirvana Lodge to see the Sunrise, it turns out this morning was overcast blocked the sun rises.

Once satisfied to take some photos, then back again to the cottage for breakfast, and proceed to the top event bersiap2 .. water play! To the dock to get to the island of Karimunjawa Small Menjangan, view coral reefs from water glass, If you like snorkeling a set of snorkeling equipment can be rented with only rp. Only 35 000 for per person. Coral reefs here in my opinion better than the time to Tidung Island and its beach is much cleaner and pollution free sea.

also fish more, do not forget to bring bread because we could feed the fish here, very nice ..

Once satisfied, go to Menjangan Besar Island, here are breeding Sharks, who dare to swim with sharks, must swim for only $. 5000 rupiah, there are also turtles and starfish size big enough.

10 hours back to Karimunjawa island was still there three hours for a shower, lunch and a nap before leaving the Islands Karimunjawajawa 12 hours.

Who wants to plan his trip can use the schedule below, because every week I and III have a fast boat to and from Jepara, so get a longer vacation. My suggestion is to prepare enough funds, to explore the island of Karimunjawa leaving on Saturday and came home on leave Tuesday to go home Tuesday or Saturday, feel more satisfied. For who wants a ticket message particularly fast boat and ferry VIP jauh2 day should have a message for this ticket is always booked out.

This is no mere information if anyone wants to visit Karimunjawa

Discover Indonesia

The Republic of Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world comprising 17,504 large and small tropical islands fringed with white sandy beaches, many still uninhabited and a number even still unnamed. Straddling the equator, situated between the continents of Asia and Australia and between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, it is as wide as the United States from San Francisco to New York, equaling the distance between London and Moscow. Indonesia has a total population of more than 215 million people from more than 200 ethnic groups. The national language is Bahasa Indonesia.

Among the most well known islands are Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan (formerly Borneo), Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), the Maluku Islands (or better known as Moluccas, the original Spice Islands) and Papua. Then, there is Bali “the world’s best island resort” with its enchanting culture, beaches, dynamic dances and music. But Indonesia still has many unexplored islands with grand mountain views, green rainforests to trek through, rolling waves to surf and deep blue pristine seas to dive in where one can swim with dugongs, dolphins and large mantarays.

Because of her location, and geology, Indonesia is blessed with the most diverse landscape, from fertile ricelands on Java and Bali to the luxuriant rainforests of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, to the savannah grasslands of the Nusatenggara islands to snow-capped peaks of West Papua.

Her wildlife ranges from the prehistoric giant Komodo lizard to the Orang Utan and the Java rhino, to the Sulawesi anoa dwarf buffalos, to birds with exquisite plumage like the cockatoo and the bird of paradise. This is also the habitat of the Rafflesia the world’s largest flower, wild orchids, an amazing variety of spices, and aromatic hardwood and a large variety of fruit trees. Underwater, scientists have found in North Sulawesi the prehistoric coelacanth fish, a “living fossil” fish, predating the dinosaurs living some 400 million years ago, while whales migrate yearly through these waters from the South Pole. Here are hundreds of species of colourful coral and tropical fish to admire.

Culturally, Indonesia fascinates with her rich diversity of ancient temples, music, ranging from the traditional to modern pop, dances, rituals and ways of life, changing from island to island, from region to region. Yet everywhere the visitor feels welcomed with that warm, gracious innate friendliness of the Indonesian people that is not easily forgotten.

Facilities-wise Indonesia’s hotels are second to none. In fact, many of our luxurious and unique hotels have constantly been listed as some of the best in the world, located on white sandy beaches, overlooking green river valleys, or situated in the heart of busy capital Jakarta. While Indonesia’s cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, or Makassar are a hive of activities for business and leisure and a paradise for shoppers, offering upscale boutiques selling top brand names, to local goods at road-side stalls. Here gourmets can treat themselves to the many regions’ delectable spicy cuisine or dine sumptuously at international restaurants. And for sheer relaxation, Indonesia Spas are second to none to reinvigorate both body and mind.

Convention centers are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, as many top international conferences and exhibitions are held in Jakarta, Bali to Manado, ranging from the Global Climate Change Conference in Bali to the World Ocean Conference in Manado , to trade and investment exhibitions and tourism trade shows in many provincial capital cities.

Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Padang, Bandung, Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Makassar are connected by direct international flights, and many regular and low cost carriers fly passengers to Indonesia’s towns or remote locations.
